A piece of Nottingham history is fading away. The Golden Fleece, a beloved pub housed in a Grade II-listed building, has sadly closed its doors. Built way back in 1845, this pub has seen generations come and go. But now, due to a combination of factors, its story has reached a difficult chapter.
On January 2nd, a spokesperson for the Golden Fleece, located on Mansfield Road, announced the closure. The reasons cited were twofold: 'serious safety concerns' regarding the building itself and the ever-increasing 'operating costs'.
Think about it: running a business, especially one as established as this, is tough. The pub, which had embraced a completely vegan approach in recent years, including everything from cleaning products to the drinks served, shared the news on Facebook. They expressed their deep regret, stating that the closure was unavoidable.
But here's where it gets controversial... The post specifically mentioned the impact of rising costs, particularly utilities, making continued operation impossible. This highlights the pressures many businesses face in today's economic climate.
Before its closure, the Golden Fleece had already faced challenges. In July 2025, the kitchen was forced to close due to the unsustainable costs of serving food. The pub's primary revenue came from drinks, including beer, spirits, wine, and cocktails.
The Golden Fleece was known for its delicious 100% vegan menu, which included items like the Holy Smoke burger, tofish and chips, mac 'n' cheese, and a Sunday vegan roast.
The social media announcement concluded with a heartfelt message of gratitude to the customers, staff, and local community for their support over the years.
