Are you a 'Ridge Racer' fan yearning for a new dose of high-speed thrills? You're not alone! The series, once a flagship title for launching new consoles, has been dormant, with the last mainline entry, 'Ridge Racer Unbounded,' hitting shelves way back in 2012.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting a new installment or even a remastered version of the original arcade classic. But, alas, Bandai Namco, the game's publisher, has remained silent, save for a vague hint at potentially licensing its games to external parties.
Thankfully, the gaming community is filled with passionate individuals! Enter DG1Games, who has taken matters into their own hands, recreating the PS1 port of 'Ridge Racer' using the innovative 'Dreams' platform on PS4 and PS5.
This project, dubbed 'Ridge Racer Advanced,' is a 'recreation and planned expansion' inspired by the 32-bit conversion that became a defining title for the original PlayStation.
"Everything is entirely built from scratch in Dreams," the developer explains. They've even included a feature to switch between different graphics styles, offering options like higher resolution settings, a pixelated PS1 mode, and modern graphics with enhanced visual effects.
The result is impressive, though some find the drifting mechanics a bit off. DG1Games plans to release the game in Dreams 'very soon.'
What are your thoughts on fan-made projects like this? Do you think it's a fitting tribute, or does it highlight the need for an official 'Ridge Racer' revival?
