Reform's Laura Anne Jones Denies Racist Intent After Chinese Slur Incident
Laura Anne Jones, a Reform politician suspended from Wales' parliament for using a racial slur about Chinese people, has denied being racist. In an interview with BBC Radio Wales, Jones explained that the offensive term she used in a WhatsApp chat was a childhood term for a takeaway, not a racist reference. She expressed genuine remorse for her actions in August 2023, acknowledging the hurt caused to the Chinese community. Jones, the only Reform Member of the Senedd (MS) for South East Wales, vowed to be more mindful of her language and has undergone language training with her staff to prevent such incidents from occurring again.
The Chinese in Wales Association (CIWA) had previously criticized the use of the term, emphasizing its deeply hurtful and racist connotations. Jones's suspension included a pay deduction and the inability to participate in Senedd proceedings during December. The standards commissioner's investigation confirmed a breach of the code of conduct but cleared her of fraudulent expenses claims. Despite the controversy, Jones maintains her innocence, emphasizing her supportive nature towards the Chinese community and her commitment to being an inclusive representative.
