A passionate plea for education reform has been made by a group of concerned parents, educators, and union leaders in Prince Edward Island (PEI). Their frustration stems from a lack of concrete answers from the two candidates vying to become PEI's next premier. The group, consisting of around 40 individuals, marched to the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown, where the final Progressive Conservative leadership forum was taking place.
With signs bearing powerful messages like "Students deserve support, not spin" and "Respect educators with resources, not slogans," they stood outside Memorial Hall, where the debate was held. Inside, the candidates, Rob Lantz and Mark Ledwell, faced more than 20 questions from the moderator, but only two of those questions focused on education.
Jen Poirier, a parent from Kelvin Grove, expressed her disappointment, stating, "We really didn't hear much substance on how they plan to help Island students K-12 with their education." She highlighted critical issues such as inadequate resources reaching the classroom, high student-to-teacher ratios, and a shortage of support for teachers.
"The system is in crisis," Poirier emphasized. "Students are slipping through the cracks, and we must worry about our future."
Colleen Jackson, president of CUPE 3260, which represents educational assistants on the Island, added, "The need for this is very clear to us." She explained that educational assistants are only paid for six hours a day, which limits their ability to advocate for students during crucial meetings that often occur after their contracted hours.
"These resources are needed," Poirier reiterated. "We want to ensure that the province takes action and increases funding to address these critical gaps in our education system."
The voting process for the PC Party leadership is currently underway, and the results will be announced at the party's leadership convention on Saturday. Poirier and her fellow advocates plan to continue their efforts, attending the Public School Branch's March meeting to keep the pressure on and advocate for the necessary changes.
