The 54-year-old Martyn was urgently admitted to a Brisbane hospital on Boxing Day after falling seriously ill. Doctors quickly diagnosed him with meningitis, a dangerous inflammation of the membranes protecting the brain and spinal cord. This condition can trigger severe complications, including permanent brain damage, hearing loss, seizures, and, tragically, even death. In Martyn's case, the prognosis was grim: doctors initially gave him only a 50% chance of survival.

On Saturday, Martyn took to social media to express his profound gratitude to the medical professionals who fought to save his life and to the countless individuals who offered their unwavering support.
"This post is A BIG thank you to ALL my family, friends and so many other people who have reached out to me!," Martyn wrote, conveying the depth of his appreciation.
He then offered a harrowing glimpse into his ordeal: "On the 27th of December 2025 my life was taken out of my hands … when meningitis took over my brain, & unbeknownst to me I was placed into a paralysed coma for 8 days to help me fight this awful disease. And that I did! Fight that is!"
Martyn's resilience shines through as he recounts defying the odds. "After being given a 50/50 chance of surviving, I came out of the induced coma 8 days later … not able to walk or talk. And yet 4 days after that, with the doctors in disbelief, I walked, I talked and proved to them all why I should be released from hospital to start my recovery." The sheer determination in his words is palpable.
He continued, expressing his joy at being back home and able to appreciate the simple pleasures of life. "So happy to be home, to be able to put my feet in the sand on the beach and to start thanking all those people that reached out to me and my family in their unwavering support."
Martyn also shared a poignant reflection on the fragility of life, stating, "This experience has reminded me of how fragile life is, how quickly everything can change & how precious time is!" This sentiment resonates deeply, reminding us to cherish each moment.
He then extended his gratitude further: "There are so many wonderful people in this world … from paramedics (at Mermaid Waters Ambulance), doctors & nurses (at Gold Coast University Hospital) … to family, friends and people I didn’t even know. I feel like I met all these fantastic people in the past 3 weeks, or they reached out to me through messages of love and support. I am so grateful to you all. Thank you! Bring on 2026 … I’m back!"
For those unfamiliar with Martyn's cricketing achievements, he was a mainstay of the Australian national team for over a decade. He played 67 Test matches and 208 One-Day Internationals between 1992 and 2006, amassing impressive statistics: 4406 runs in Test cricket at an average of 46.4, including 13 centuries, and an additional 5346 runs in ODIs. He was a key member of Australia’s dominant squads during the early 2000s, including the victorious 2003 World Cup team.
And this is the part most people miss... Before his international success, Martyn was a highly touted junior player, even captaining Australia's under-19 side. He made his Test debut at the young age of 21. Born in Darwin, he later moved to Western Australia, where he became the state's youngest-ever captain in 1993, at just 23 years old.
